Greece has approximately 6,000 islands, 227 of which are inhabited. These islands attract large numbers of tourists each year. On the islands one can enjoy the sun, the sea, the beaches and the beautiful scenery.  The best known islands are probably Crete, Kos, Rhodos and Corfu. But Lesbos and Zakynthos are also worth a visit.

Crete

Crete is the largest and best known Greek island. The seaside resort Chersonissos is especially popular with Dutch youngsters, but Crete is also worthwile for elderly people, families and couples. Crete is often associated with mass tourism, but because of its size, Crete has ample quiet spots where one can enjoy the beautiful scenery. Crete has several gorges. The Samaria Gorge is the best known of them. You can make beautiful hikes through this gorge.

Kos

Kos is considerably smaller than Crete. Kos is also visited by lots of youngsters for its bustling nightlife. The island is reasonably flat, making it suitable for cycling. On Kos, natural warm water wells are found. These thermae were probably created by the vulcano on the neighbouring island of Nisyros. From Kos there are daily boat trips to the Turkish town of Bodrum.

Rhodos

Rhodos is one of the Dodekanesos islands. The island of Rhodos has a butterfly valley where beautiful butterflies can be admired in June, July and August. Scattered over the island are several remains of former towns.

Corfu

Corfu is known for its beautiful beaches and scenery. It is a green island. Corfu is also popular with youngsters. The island has various sights. For instance, there is a mouse island that can be visited and the waterfalls to the North of the island are also worth a visit.

Lesbos

From Lesbos you can see the coast of Turkey. Lesbos is especially known for its petrified forest, a 15 million year old forest that became petrified as a result of a vulcanic eruption. Lesbos also has warm water wells and large nature reserves. In addition, Lesbos is known for the high quality of its olive oil.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos is a beautiful island known for the Caretta Turtle who lays her eggs here. Early in the morning these turtles can be admired on the beach. They are protected, though. Several boat trips take you to a famous ship wreck. The town of Laganas is known for its bustling nightlife, attracting mainly English youngsters.
