Shopping in Stockholm, Sweden

This is not what I'm searching for. Written on 24-09-2010 by FlinCC

A common reason for a visit to Stockholm is shopping. Of course you can shop everywhere, but when it comes to fashion, Stockholm is an absolute paradise. Shoes, bags, (designer)fashion, souvenirs; you can find practically everything in the Swedish capital. Good shoppingspots are the old city, Drottninggatan, H&M and the outlet.

Gamla Stan (the old city)

In Gamla Stan you will find a lot of nice shops. These aren’t all standard souvenir shops. You can find a lot of nice boutiques and shoe stores. And don’t forget the typical Swedish souvenirs like the Dalahasten. These are small wooden, painted horses, which are mostly bought as a gift for family and friends. Most souvenir shops have nice must haves for low prices. For art lovers there are a few good art shops and galleries. However, shopping here is more expensive than in the standard souvenir shops. Other must haves are magnets, woollen pullovers, wooden Viking dolls, many beautifully painted souvenirs, splendid handmade glass-items, leather and wood. When you visit Stockholm in the second and third week of December, the Christmas market of Gamla San is an absolute must-see. The Christmas market in the old city looks like a fairy tale. Here you will find a lot of small presents, souvenirs and Swedish delicacies.

Drottninggatan

Dottninggatan is one of the most famous shopping streets of Stockholm. This shopping paradise is filled with shops, boutiques, franchise stores, cafés and restaurants. Big pro is that this a car free street, which allows you to window shop without worrying about what is happening around you. Must see is Hansmakar’n, a nice little shop that sells gloves and bags. The warehouse Åhlens is also worth a visit. This is a big and well known warehouse, with three floors. They sell their own label and a fine collection of glass items. In the basement you will find a supermarket. The warehouse also has a great collection of Swedish traditional handmade products and delicious chocolate. Åhlens is especially wonderful around Christmas, with beautiful decorations and lights.

H&M

Besides IKEA, also H&M is a Swedish invention. No surprise that there are several H&M shops in the Swedish capital. Also, the H&M clothes in Stockholm are even cheaper than in other countries. Smart thing to do is to travel with a half empty suitcase and to fill it with the low-priced, fashionable clothes of this Swedish fashion empire.

Outlets

What is better than to find clothes for a low price and still wear well known brands? For this you have to go to an outlet store. One of the most well known outlets in Stockholm is Barkaby. This is a factory outlet, which contains of +/- 60 shops with menswear, womenswear, childrens fashion, shoes, bags, accessories, sportswear, relaxing clothes and much more. At Barkarby you will find brands like Fornarina, Lacoste, Lee, Paul Smith, Nike, Mexx, Hugo Boss, Björn Borg and Filipa K.

I rest my case, on to Shopholm!
