Amsterdam is the capital and one of the biggest tourist magnets of The Netherlands. There are a lot of reasons to come for to Amsterdam, but below you find the top 10.
1 Take a canal cruise
If you really want to see Amsterdam from a different point of view, you have to do a canal tour. You see a lot of the beautiful centre of Amsterdam in a relaxing way. There are a lot of different operators, with different services (only tour or including dinner or party)
2 Rent a water bike
If you don’t want to be packed in a boat with a lot of other tourists, you can rent a water bike and do a tour on the canals yourself. Watch out for the Canal boats or other boats. You will not be the first one to be hit.
3 Rent a bike
If you don’t like water, you can rent a bike for touring through the streets of Amsterdam. Cycling is a typical way of transportation in Amsterdam. Lock your bike properly.
4 Visit museums
The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum are the two best known museums. Here you can see masterpieces of well-known artists like Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals.
5 Visit the Anne Frank House
The world known Anne Frank House is the house where the Jewish girl Anne Frank was hiding during World War 2. You can see how she and her family lived here during the war.
6 Walk through the Red light district
The red light district is one of the biggest tourist attractions of Amsterdam known for its prostitutes. Because it is always crowded, watch out for pick-pockets.
7 Coffeeshops
A lot of young tourists only come for the coffeeshops. Marijuana is not legal, but tolerated in The Netherlands, but other drugs aren’t.
8 Admire the Architecture
Wherever you go in the centre of Amsterdam, you can admire the typical architecture of the Dutch buildings. The centre of Amsterdam is not as big as many other cities worldwide, so you can see a lot by walking.
9 The Jordaan
The Jordaan is a typical former working class area. You can still feel that atmosphere in one the cosy bars or markets.
10 Bars and discos
The two most famous areas for bars and discos are the Leidseplein en het Rembrandsplein. By day you can enjoy a drink on one of the terraces, by night you can party in one of the discos.
